The Hyatt Residence: A Unique and Functional House Design by Li Lang

Maximizing Space and Meeting the Needs of Every Family Member

Spanning a total of 360 square meters, The Hyatt Residence is a testament to the meticulous planning and attention to detail by Li Lang and the design team. The project was completed in Changsha, China, between March 2020 and January 2021.

The inspiration for The Hyatt Residence stemmed from the desire to create a space that could accommodate the needs of individuals of all ages. The design team aimed to allocate spaces that would cater to each family member's activities, storage requirements, and personal preferences. Additionally, the design sought to provide a functionally flexible environment suitable for diverse group activities, with an abundance of natural light permeating every corner.

What sets The Hyatt Residence apart is its ability to maximize the different needs of family members while allowing them to live together harmoniously. The design achieves this by providing relatively independent spaces for each individual, ensuring privacy and comfort. This unique feature makes it an ideal choice for the aging population, as well as for satisfying the various demands of family members at different stages of life.

The floor design of The Hyatt Residence breaks away from the traditional three-story pattern, creating rich spatial layers that extend in multiple directions. By utilizing different shapes and sizes, the design team has successfully crafted a visually captivating environment that adds depth and character to the house.

One of the standout features of The Hyatt Residence is the integration of an elevator. The design team dismantled the existing concrete staircase to make room for the elevator, ensuring seamless accessibility throughout the house. The elevator room on the first floor serves a dual purpose, functioning as a hallway and providing ample storage space for the family members. Partial high ceilings add visual interest to the living space, creating a dynamic and engaging atmosphere.

The first-floor balcony of The Hyatt Residence is a spacious area that serves multiple functions. It features an indoor garden, bringing a touch of nature into the house, and also serves as a secondary private space for male family members to relax, smoke, and engage in conversations.

Another noteworthy addition to The Hyatt Residence is the living room on the second floor. Originally, the house did not include a living room on this level, but the design team cleverly utilized the space above the first-floor balcony to create this area. Located directly above the center of the patio in the leisure area, this living room provides an additional space for group activities, fostering interaction and recreation without the need to go downstairs.

The design of The Hyatt Residence was not without its challenges. However, through careful planning and creative problem-solving, Li Lang and the design team successfully overcame these obstacles. The result is a design that not only meets the diverse needs of family members but also incorporates elements of modern, retro, and national classic styles. The use of multi-color and soft fabrics adds warmth and comfort to the space, while the avoidance of unit furniture allows for future flexibility in redecoration.
